BRITISH CINEMATOGRAPHER

MULTIPLE LOOKS IN ONE SEASON

Coming on board Apple TV comedy LOOT for series three, DP Jason Oldak pushed to evolve the visuals alongside the evolution of main character Molly Wells – here, he explains how.

I was hired onto the third season of Loot for Apple TV.  This is a show that has already had an established look for two seasons. However, as I started to read the first few scripts for season three, I found that Molly Wells (Maya Rudolph) is becoming very clear with who she is and her direction in life. She has decided to separate herself from the billionaires who, in her words, “are hoarding their money and don’t want the world to change. They want all the power!”

Lighting Up “Doin’ It”: Cinematographer Jason Oldak on Balancing Heart, Humor, and Heightened Realism

In Doin’ It, an Indian-American virgin unexpectedly lands a job teaching high school sex ed, setting the stage for one of the year’s most refreshingly honest and offbeat comedies. Behind the camera, cinematographer Jason Oldak infused the film with a sense of heightened realism, steering clear of the overly polished “studio comedy” aesthetic. Shot on the Sony Venice 2 with T and G anamorphics, Oldak’s approach captures the awkwardness and warmth of self-discovery while transforming Canadian backdrops into convincing American and Indian settings. From crafting a custom LUT for cross-continental authenticity to staging an ethereal “black void” dream sequence on a tight budget, Oldak’s vision makes Doin’ It as visually distinct as it is emotionally resonant.

He says, “We loved what the ICG crew over at Winning Time had achieved with their basketball footage, but this was not that show.
